Transitioning to College: A Guide for Penn State Students

The transition to college can be exciting for young adults, but can also be a challenging time.  First-year students must adapt to their new environment and to their new freedom and independence.  For many young adults, college is the first time they are living away from home and are no longer under the careful supervision of parents.  They must make new friends, adjust to their new living arrangement with roommates, and navigate their way around campus and classes.  College might also be the first time they are exposed to alcohol and other substances.  This time in a young adult’s life can be very stressful, which is why researchers are now devoting so much attention to studying this developmental stage.

The purpose of this blog is to provide research-based information regarding the challenges faced by college students, with a focus on first-year students.  This site can also be used as a resource for parents learning more about their child’s transition to college and about the various services available to their child at Penn State.
